Senate passes tax fraud legislation

2013-05-06

The Senate approved a bill to help law enforcement bring charges against those found with ledgers and medical records with other people’s names, birth records, and Social Security numbers.

The bill was written after local media reports that suspects were let go after being found in possession of personal identification with state prosecutors reluctant to charge without proof of fraud.

Authorities say in the last two years stolen identity fraud has “exploded” in the Tampa Bay area. The bill allows a defense that the person reasonably thought he or she was entitled legally to possess the information, as well as provides exemptions for parents with their children’s information.
